Ring Resizing

(Sizing up & Sizing down)

Ring resizing is the process of modifying a ring's size to fit a different finger. With weight loss, weight gain, inheriting or gifting the ring, may make this necessary. These are common things that can change the way your ring fits on your finger. To resize rings, find an experienced jeweler who knows how to do it well. This will guarantee the best outcome.

Jewelers use a method called "sizing up" to make rings larger. This involves cutting the shank of the ring and adding additional metal to increase its circumference. We file down the excess metal, and polish the ring to restore its original appearance. People commonly use this method for gold, silver, and platinum rings.

Another method, known as "sizing down," involves removing a piece of the shank from the bottom of the ring and soldering it back together. We then fill the remaining gap with metal and polish the ring to give it a seamless appearance. Jewelers use this technique on most types of rings.

Jewelers commonly use a method called "sizing beads" to resize rings. This technique involves adding small metal beads to the inside of the ring band. These beads act as a buffer, filling the gap between the ring and the finger.

Jewelers also use a method called "ring cutting." As the name suggests, this technique involves cutting a small section out of the ring band and then soldering it back together. This method is commonly use this when needed to make the ring smaller. But, cutting rings may not work for all types, especially those with detailed designs or gemstones.

To stretch and ring, you can use a process called "ring stretching." This method involves carefully stretching the ring band to increase its size. A jeweler with the right tools and skills stretches rings without causing any damage to them.

In some cases, a jeweler may recommend adding or removing metal to resize a ring. "Ring shanking" is a method to resize rings by adding or removing metal to make them bigger or smaller. Ring shanking is a difficult way to resize a ring while keeping its original design and strength.

Please be aware that you cannot resize all rings. Resizing rings with complex designs or gemstones can be difficult without affecting their look or strength. If a ring is too oversized or too undersized, a jeweler can suggest using a ring guard. They can also recommend getting a custom-made ring that fits the finger perfectly.

To ensure a correct and long-lasting resizing of your ring, take it to a skilled jeweler. At Vernon Jewelers, our skilled jewelers will carefully resize your ring. This ensures that the ring remains strong and that the gemstones stay in good condition.
